Originally from Manizales, Colombia, Andres “Andy” Baena has lived in California since the tender age of three. He remembers watching his father play soccer and it was then that his passion for the sport was born. Great friendships, discipline, and the meaning of hard work on and off the field are all lessons soccer has taught him. He truly enjoys helping children start their soccer experience in a fun, positive, and healthy environment. Andy now plays soccer for fun and is happy to be a part of the Soccer Shots team.

Jorge comes to Soccer Shots with several years of experience working with children. He worked previously for LA’s Best after-school program, and has completed a degree in Early Childhood Education.

Now that he is coaching with Soccer Shots not only does he remember ways that he was taught soccer, but he can relate to many of the kids since he also started at the same age. Soccer is a huge part of his life! Jorge loves the sport; it has taught him a great amount of respect, honesty, sportsmanship, and commitment. Traits that are always fun to learn while playing the game you love. He looks forward to meeting all the Soccer Shots parents and players on the field and having amazing seasons with everyone!

Coach Andrew loves Soccer Shots because it gives kids a chance to learn to love a sport played all over the world in a fun an encouraging environment.

In addition to Soccer Shots, Andrew volunteers at his church in the Children’s Ministry department working with children from 1st grade all the way to 6th grade.

Coach Tony love Soccer Shots because he enjoys seeing the children smile when they are having fun during a session, and he finds the team atmosphere to be awesome!

Most memorable moment playing sports as a child? Waking up early to play sports on Saturdays and then having breakfast with his family after the game.

Before working for Soccer Shots Coach Justin worked at Disneyland as a Skipper on the Jungle Cruise.

Most memorable moment playing sports as a child? Playing for his dad as his coach.

Other fun facts? At age 14 he had a black belt, and he reads a new book once a week.

Other fun facts? Kyle speaks French and has been to the World Cup.

With a passion to help others, Coach Mario has found it extremely rewarding to work with children. With 4 years of experience working for LAUSD as a sports coach, recess program leader, fitness club leader and a TA in the classroom, he understands the importance of physical activity for students. Coach Mario is First Aid and CPR Certified; he also has studied Early Childhood Education.

In addition to Soccer Shots Ana works as a Playground Supervisor/Trainer for Youth Services/LAUSD. She coaches children for tournaments in different sports, assists with homework, and encourages healthy eating and exercising.

Favorite fruits and vegetables? Bananas, mangoes, watermelon, spinach, kale, carrots, and edamame.

Relevant degrees or training? BA in Liberal Studies; currently working on a Child Development certification.

Fun Facts?  Coach Andy plays ice hockey.  In his free time, he enjoys a good game of golf.

What does Coach Ben  love the most about Soccer Shots?  I’m a true fan of the positive learning environment.

Favorite childhood memory playing sports?  I remember hitting the fence when playing baseball!

What does Coach Ben do in his free time?  When he’s not teaching, Coach Ben enjoys playing guitar.

Coach Cat loves Soccer Shots because we get to be as silly as possible every day, with amazing, fabulous children!

Relevant degrees or training? Certified child yoga instructor, Social and emotional arts instructor through UCLA Arts and Healing, CPR/First Aid certified. Cat has also worked with City Year Los Angeles in an elementary school in Watts, and as a camp counselor at Brave Trails, Camp Galileo, and Camp Aranu’tiq.

Other fun facts? Coach Cat never wears matching socks (ever).

Prior to working with Soccer Shots, Coach Diego was a Big Brother with Big Brothers Big Sisters in Northern New Jersey. He currently attends CSUN full time, working on a degree in Marketing.

Favorite movie(s) as a child? E.T and Jurassic Park

Favorite childhood memory playing sports?
My favorite memory playing sports would have to be playing soccer with my older brother in our backyard; I would always be the goalie.

Coach Drew loves Soccer Shots because he sincerely loves working with children, and watching their minds work when attempting to learn new skills. It brings him joy when a child’s face lights up after he or she has learned something new, and was able to successfully complete it.

In addition to Soccer Shots Coach Drew works for a talent agency called The Gersh Agency, where he is working to become an agent.

What did you do before Soccer Shots? Played professional soccer.

Coach Erik loves Soccer Shots because he can have a positive impact on children’s lives while teaching them how fun soccer is.

Coach Justin loves Soccer Shots for their commitment to teaching children at a young age about the beautiful sport of soccer. Not only does he admire this commitment, but he believes it is important to teach children team building exercises at a young age, and there is no better way to do this than through soccer.

In addition to Soccer Shots, Justin is a substitute teacher for various grade levels and special education schools. He chose to substitute teach because he’s also working towards getting a masters in education, as well as a multiple subject teaching credential to become an elementary school teacher.

Favorite fruits? Cherries, blueberries, mangos and bananas. Favorite vegetables? Broccoli, spinach, kale and cauliflower. For the “Is it a fruit or vegetable?” category… he loves avocados and tomatoes.

Before Soccer Shots, Coach Michael worked for an after school program called “Arc” for almost two years, managing a middle school soccer team.

Coach Michael loves Soccer Shots because it revolves around the best sport in the world, and we are building character through soccer. He also loves having the privilege to teach children the love for the sport.

Favorite movie as a child?
“Goal”. It always hits home. He came from the same background and it made him strive to continue playing soccer and being the best that he can be in life.

In addition to Soccer Shots Coach Nguyen teaches robotics for after-school programs, volunteers at the YMCA, homeless shelter, and my church in various areas.

Nguyen loves Soccer Shots because can teach children to learn and love the sport that he grew up playing.

Prior to joining the Soccer Shots Team, Coach Sheila was a nanny to two families, until she was ready for a family of her own. Now she is a mother to a daughter patiently awaiting her own Soccer Shots debut.

Sheila loves Soccer Shots because she gets the opportunity to witness the emotional highs and lows of learning something new and the personal growth that occurs for each child.
