Joel Newman, Executive Director
Joel believes that children learn best when they love what they’re doing. That’s why he believes in the fun, non-competitive curriculum of Soccer Shots, which goes beyond the game by incorporating character building lessons each week.
Joel started Soccer Shots Portland in 2010 because he wanted to devote himself to community building. Joel’s background includes a BA in Religious Studies, a Masters in Business, 9 years of consulting, 2 years of running a restaurant, and 9 summers being a camp counselor. While Joel has had a variety of different experiences, one thing has always been a constant: soccer. When he decided to turn to community building, soccer was the perfect platform.
Joel now spends his time at Soccer Shots focusing on program quality, making community connections and coaching.

Commitment to Community: Giving Back By Partnering AC Portland
We’re on a mission to positively transform the world through soccer but we really only get to do so with the families who choose our program. We’re a business and we need to charge a fair price to deliver a program that exceeds expectations but the reality is there are many families in our community who can’t afford our price point or any price point for that matter. Does this mean their children should not get to play soccer or worse yet, not get the great life benefits that come along with it? Don’t all children in our community deserve opportunities to build confidence, exercise, be on a team, get better grades and make more friends?
We know there are many we’ll never reach on our mission but through our new partnership with AC Portland, we can reach a lot more. AC Portland may be a “tiny” non-profit tucked away in the basement of adidas, but they’re executing a world class model that delivers tangible long term health results. The model, Soccer for Success (embed video below?) was developed by the US Soccer Foundation, an organization that came to exist from $56 million of the net proceeds from the 1994 World Cup soccer tournament held in the United States. The US Soccer Foundation provides the grant that allows AC Portland to deliver exceptional programming to children who simply wouldn’t get programming otherwise. That grant just isn’t enough to cover AC Portland’s expenses though. The US Soccer Foundation just provides the seed money. Locally, AC Portland needs partners to deliver the benefits of Soccer for Success to local children. That’s where the Timbers, Thorns, adidas and now Soccer Shots have stepped in. *Over the course of the next year, we’ve committed to raising and contributing more than $10,000 for AC Portland, *to help increase the impact we’re making, to reach children and families in our community we otherwise couldn’t. We can’t thank AC Portland enough for this opportunity to take our mission further than we’d ever hoped!
As part of our commitment to raise funds for AC Portland, Soccer Shots will donate $1 for every participant that registers for one of our programs during our upcoming Fall and Spring Seasons. That means every family who joins us in the Spring and Fall will be contributing too! Additionally, we’ll be gathering used equipment from our networks to donate to AC Portland, who will get them to children and families who value and appreciate them. Deepening our support, Soccer Shots and AC Portland will also work together to hire, train, and support coaches in hopes to always bring the best to the children we serve. We could not feel prouder of the belonging to a community of partners so dedicated to positively impact children through soccer.
If you have a passion for positively impacting children, we’d love to talk to you.

The History of Soccer Shots
Our founding partners, Jeremy Sorzano and Jason Webb, were soccer teammates both in college and professionally. They formed Soccer Shots® in 1998 after recognizing a lack of quality soccer programs for children under age 8. They shared an entrepreneurial spirit, a deep love of soccer, and a passion to inspire children to live fit and healthy lives.
The success of Soccer Shots in Charlotte, NC and Harrisburg, PA, where Sorzano and Webb first launched their businesses, led to several of their friends and former teammates wanting to get involved. In 2005, Soccer Shots began franchising and opened its first four franchises in OH, DE, FL, and PA. The business opportunity began to attract more soccer entrepreneurs, and Soccer Shots has enjoyed growing around the country and into Canada.
In May of 2009, Justin Bredeman, another former college soccer teammate, became the third Soccer Shots partner. Justin brought with him eight years of experience from Auntie Anne’s, Inc., a pretzel franchising company, where he led a team that supported nearly 800 franchise units. His deep understanding of the franchise business model also comes from the knowledge gained from his five years of owning and running a Soccer Shots business of his own.
In August of 2009, the Soccer Shots partners founded the Soccer Shots Foundation, the non-profit arm of Soccer Shots. The Soccer Shots Foundation provides opportunities to economically challenged children within the U.S. and around the world through the game of soccer. (Read more about the Soccer Shots Foundation here).
From its humble beginnings, Soccer Shots has grown beyond Jeremy and Jason’s biggest dreams, with over 180 territories across 37 states and Canada. In 2016, more than 335,000 children participated in Soccer Shots.
The business is consistently recognized by Entrepreneur Magazine as the #1 Children’s Fitness Franchise in the U.S. And today, Soccer Shots is positioned as the best-in-class children’s soccer program with a focus on character development.
And while the accolades are appreciated, our mission remains focused – positively impacting children’s lives.
Soccer Shots Franchising, LLC is based in central Pennsylvania, just east of Harrisburg.
