Coach Joel

Executive Director & Coach

Background: Joel started Soccer Shots Portland in 2010 because he wanted to devote himself to community building. While Joel has had a variety of different experiences, one thing has always been a constant: soccer. When he decided to turn to community building, soccer was the perfect platform. In his own words, “Soccer has been a constant in my life for more than 20 years. It’s made me part of a community and brought me many joys.”

Coach Kailyn

Director of Marketing & Operations & Coach

Background: Coach Kailyn, or Coach K. as the kids affectionately know her, came to Soccer Shots in June 2011 from the world of business and design. Before joining Soccer Shots, Kailyn was full time graphic designer and spent time in Ghana working at a preschool. She started playing soccer when she was six and has had a life long love of the game. In her free time, Kailyn loves to be outside.

Coach Kerry Rae

Assistant Director of Program Development

Background: Kerry Rae joined the Soccer Shots team after many years working in the nonprofit sector. She has been the director of youth programs for SUN Schools, Girls on the Run and the YMCA. Kerry Rae is passionate about community building through empowering individuals, especially girls, to use their voice. She has made many lifelong friends through soccer and loves playing on her women’s team, especially when they travel to tournaments.

Coach Allison

Background: Coach Allison loves working with kids! She has been a preschool teacher, kindergarten teacher, basketball coach, baseball coach and now a soccer coach! Allison has her Multiple Subject Teaching Credentials for grades k-8 grade. Last year, Allison lived in South Korea teaching English classes to elementary school students.

Coach Emily

Background: Coach Emily brings a lot of soccer experience with her. She started playing soccer when she was 3 years old and played competitively throughout high school, receiving a scholarship to play soccer at Northeastern State University. Emily competed at the collegiate level for two years until an unfortunate injury forced her to “retire” from the game. Emily has experience working at an Elementary School, was a part of the Boys and Girls Club, and coached a local U7 team.

Background: Sara grew up in Northern California and has been playing soccer since she was a toddler. Throughout high school she was fortunate to be surrounded by people who encouraged and believed in her, which led her to play club level collegiate soccer for California Polytechnic State University. After graduating, she moved to Seattle where she coached soccer to a group of adorable youngsters.

Background: Monica is joining Soccer Shots after working for 15 years in the construction/engineering field. Currently pursuing a masters in education, working for Soccer Shots is her first step in her transition to answer the call to work with kids and families. As Soccer Shots Program Ambassador, Monica is the person who answers the phone when you call the Soccer Shots office.

Background: Coach Mark has come to Soccer Shots from the United Kingdom. He graduated from the University of Central Lancashire in 2012 with a Degree in BA Sports Coaching. Coach Mark brings a lot of coaching experience. His coaching qualifications include F.A Level 1 & F.A Level 2, Coaching Children with Disabilities & F.A Guide to Coaching Futsal to Beginners.

Background: Coach Steven started at Soccer Shots Los Angeles in 2013. Soccer Shots Portland was lucky to hire him shortly after his move to Portland. After taking six months off to live in London, he is back at Soccer Shots as a Program Coordinator. Coming from a long line of educators, he’s excited about getting to spend his days working with kids. Coach Steven has also been playing soccer his whole life and is an aspiring novelist.

Coach Gina

Background: Soccer has been Coach Gina’s main passion in life. At age four she began her soccer career by playing on a boys team and continued playing competitively until she broke her foot in her last college game. When Gina aged out of youth camps, she asked if she could still come and help out with the younger campers. That’s when she learned she also had a great passion for working with children.

Background: Coach Shelby has been having fun at Soccer Shots since fall of 2012 when she moved to Portland. She is now a Program Coordinator as well as a coach. Shelby has a B.S. in physical activity and exercise education. She’s been playing soccer since elementary school and aspires to be as impactful on young people’s lives as her coaches were on her life.

Wild Card: Shelby has a loud voice that carries. Growing up, teachers always asked her to use her indoor voice. She still has a hard time with this when she gets excited.

Background: Coach Ali came to Soccer Shots in June 2014. She coaches with us part time as she is also a second grade teacher. She started playing soccer in elementary school and has been coaching young kids since she was in high school. While she is no longer an active player, she loves coaching and cheering on her teams!

Coach Elliott

Background: Elliott arrives at Soccer Shots with 12 years of experience as a sports instructor. Born and raised in Portland, Elliott attended Lincoln High School where he received 3 Varsity letters for soccer. He then attended the University of Arizona, obtaining a bachelors in Psychology before getting his M.A. in Sport-Exercise Psychology. From there, Coach Elliott has gone on to start his own business, Portland Sport Psychology.

Background: Coach Glenn came to soccer shots after previously working in Kansas City, MO as a youth sports director for the YMCA. Glenn began coaching in a volunteer role and quickly realized this was a passion he needed to pursue as a career. He grew up playing organized baseball, football and basketball, but my first ever organized team sport was SOCCER!

Background: Coach John teaches pre-k at a child development center. John was born and raised in Portland Oregon before living in Eugene to attend U of O (go ducks). In Eugene he began working in youth sports and started a career working as a pre-k teacher. He started playing soccer, along with other sports, when he was five.

Background: Soccer was Coach Jon’s first love. He started playing when he was four with his two older brothers. He played through high school and continues to play recreational soccer. Coach Jon worked with kids in Springfield as a referee in college. He hopes to positively impact kids in the same way his brothers impacted him.

Background: Coach Joslynn comes to Soccer Shots after nine years with Top Siccer, a soccer program for children with disabilities. Joslynn has also coached the Special Olympics’ Project Unify Basketball and Soccer programs fro two years. Her passion for working with children extends to her career goals as she pursues her secondary education degree at Concordia University.

Background: As the cousin of Soccer Shots Executive Director, Julia is a special coach. She started with Soccer Shots in 2013 when she was just 14 years old! J Julia has been playing soccer her entire life and comes from a family of soccer players. Julia loves getting to interact and work with kids especially through the game of soccer! Julia has a special way with kids and is a leader in her high school, starting SAFER (Student Active for Ending Rape).

Background: Coach Kelly has been playing soccer since she was five years old. She currently works at an elementary school where she is an educational assistant. Coach Kelly has worked there for four years, and it is her job to teach students new games that are fun and safe for everyone at recess!

Coach Marissa

Background: Sports have always been a large part of Marissa’s life. She grew up playing soccer and golf and continues to play today. Her experience with children has been volunteering in elementary schools teaching American Sign Language and assisting golf camps in the summer. Currently, she’s pursuing a Human Biology degree and will be graduating in December!

Coach Melanie

Background: Coach Melanie loves soccer. She started playing on a team when she was nine years old but has loved the sport ever since she could walk. Her dad introduced her to it when she was very young and taught her a lot about the game. She is half Argentine and even though she’s only been there once as a baby, soccer has always helped her feel connected to her family there, who also loves the game. She is very excited to share her love of this sport with the children she coaches.

Coach Morgan

Background: Morgan grew up in the Midwest, but she moved to Portland in the summer of last year. Morgan has a wide variety of talents that keep her occupied, especially in the fine arts. She dabbles in jewelry making, photography, drawing, painting, cooking, violin, and of course, soccer. Morgan grew up playing sports including speed skating, basketball, track and field, cross-country, bicycling, but soccer has continued to be her favorite. She still plays on an indoor league in town.

Background: Before coming to Soccer Shots, Sam worked as a window and door installer, at a butcher shop, and at a K-8 school working as an instructional aide in the kindergarten and aftercare teacher. After working away from kids, he realized that his true passion was in working with youth. Coach Sam played soccer, baseball, basketball, and football growing up, and still enjoys them all to this day!

Coach Tom

Background: Coach Tom moved to Portland from the UK five years ago where he has continued his love affair with the game of soccer. Having played for as long as he can remember, Tom realized he would never play in a World Cup and thus decided he would have to do the next best thing; coach at the World Cup and so began his coaching career at just 16. Tom has coached at many levels and age groups (from U5-U18) and in many countries (including the UK, Singapore, Australia, Spain and the US).
Credentials: FA Coaching Levels 1 & 2, USSF F & E Licenses, CPR/First Aid Certified, NFHS Certified Soccer Coach.

Passions: Besides watching, writing about, reading about, playing and coaching soccer Tom is an unapologetic film nerd/snob.
Wild Card: Tom takes great pride in his ability to solve fictional murders, in either book, TV or film format. Locked room mysteries are his specialty.

Background: Coach Katie has been passionate about working with children for most of her life. She has worked as a swim coach, nanny, and has volunteered in many preschools. She started playing soccer when she was 4 and after 9 years, traded in a soccer ball for a swimsuit and water polo ball. She now works full time for the Oregon Department of Corrections in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion pursuing one of her passions of advocating for and creating diversity in the workforce.

Background: Leia is currently in school at Oregon State University studying Biology with a Pre-Dental option. Since she was 5 years old, she has wanted to be a dentist. Coach Leia has played
soccer for 12 years and traveled all over the country in the love of the game.

Background: Combining her love for soccer and kids, coach Taylor started at Soccer Shots in April 2017. She’s played soccer since she was six years old and has been captivated by the sport since. When she’s not coaching she’s in her art studio running her own design business.
