Coach Joel

Executive Director & Coach

Background: Joel started Soccer Shots Portland in 2010 because he wanted to devote himself to community building. While Joel has had a variety of different experiences, one thing has always been a constant: soccer. When he decided to turn to community building, soccer was the perfect platform. In his own words, “Soccer has been a constant in my life for more than 20 years. It’s made me part of a community and brought me many joys.”

Coach Kailyn

Director of Marketing & Coach

Background: Coach Kailyn, or Coach K. as the kids affectionately know her, came to Soccer Shots in June 2011 from the world of business and design. Before joining Soccer Shots, Kailyn was a full-time graphic designer and spent time in Ghana working at a preschool. She started playing soccer when she was six and has had a life long love of the game. In her free time, Kailyn loves to be outside.

Coach Allison

Background: Coach Allison loves working with kids! She has been a preschool teacher, kindergarten teacher, basketball coach, baseball coach and now a soccer coach! Allison has her Multiple Subject Teaching Credentials for grades k-8 grade. Last year, Allison lived in South Korea teaching English classes to elementary school students.

Coach Emily

Background: Coach Emily brings a lot of soccer experience with her. She started playing soccer when she was 3 years old and played competitively throughout high school, receiving a scholarship to play soccer at Northeastern State University. Emily competed at the collegiate level for two years until an unfortunate injury forced her to “retire” from the game. Emily has experience working at an Elementary School, was a part of the Boys and Girls Club, and coached a local U7 team.

Background: Soccer has been Coach Gina’s main passion in life. At age four she began her soccer career by playing on a boys team and continued playing competitively until she broke her foot in her last college game. When Gina aged out of youth camps, she asked if she could still come and help out with the younger campers. That’s when she learned she also had a great passion for working with children.

Coach Mark

Background: Coach Mark has come to Soccer Shots from the United Kingdom. He graduated from the University of Central Lancashire in 2012 with a Degree in BA Sports Coaching. Coach Mark brings a lot of coaching experience. His coaching qualifications include F.A Level 1 & F.A Level 2, Coaching Children with Disabilities & F.A Guide to Coaching Futsal to Beginners.

Coach Steven

Background: Coach Steven started at Soccer Shots Los Angeles in 2013. Soccer Shots Portland was lucky to hire him shortly after his move to Portland. After taking six months off to live in London, he is back at Soccer Shots as a Program Coordinator. Coming from a long line of educators, he’s excited about getting to spend his days working with kids. Coach Steven has also been playing soccer his whole life and is an aspiring novelist.

Coach Amber

Background: Coach Amber is in college, studying towards a bachelor’s degree in criminology. She loves spending her time at her local theater or helping in the special education department at her old high school. Amber started playing soccer at the age of six, moving through recreational soccer all the way up to competitive league soccer.

Background: Soccer was Coach Jon’s first love. He started playing when he was four with his two older brothers. He played through high school and continues to play recreational soccer. Coach Jon worked with kids in Springfield as a referee in college. He hopes to positively impact kids in the same way his brothers impacted him.

Coach Sam

Background: Before coming to Soccer Shots, Sam worked as a window and door installer, at a butcher shop, and at a K-8 school working as an instructional aide in the kindergarten and aftercare teacher. After working away from kids, he realized that his true passion was in working with youth. Coach Sam played soccer, baseball, basketball, and football growing up, and still enjoys them all to this day!

Background: Coach Abbie is fairly new to Oregon, most recently coming from Tacoma and Southern California before that. She loves being active and teaching sports; not only soccer but also yoga and snowboarding at Mt. Hood! Soccer has been a passion of Abbie’s since she was 7 years old and she can’t wait to share this passion with others as she starts as a new coach.

Background: Coach Ali came to Soccer Shots in June 2014. She coaches with us part time as she is also a second-grade teacher. She started playing soccer in elementary school and has been coaching young kids since she was in high school. While she is no longer an active player, she loves coaching and cheering on her teams!

Background: Coach Annie has a BA in social works. She has experience working for a nonprofit, helping children of refugee families. Annie played soccer from age 3-17 at both the recreational and classic level. For her, the highlights of playing soccer include teamwork and personal growth!

Background: Coach Ash grew up on the small island of Puerto Rico where she began her degree in Outdoor Recreation at the University of Puerto Rico. She recently moved to the states and eventually to Portland with the determination to complete her degree and build a life as a west coast gal! She has played soccer all her life and is excited about sharing her love of the sport with others.

Background: Daniel moved to the US from Venezuela three years ago, where he played semi-professional soccer. He continues to love the game and plays recreationally. Daniel loves that Soccer Shots is able to combine his love of kids with his love of the game. His patient, easy-going side complements his fun-loving, playful side – on the pitch and in life!

Background: Coach John teaches pre-k at a child development center. John was born and raised in Portland Oregon before living in Eugene to attend U of O (go ducks). In Eugene, he began working in youth sports and started a career working as a pre-k teacher. He started playing soccer, along with other sports, when he was five.

Background: Coach Joslynn comes to Soccer Shots after nine years with Top Soccer, a soccer program for children with disabilities. Joslynn has also coached the Special Olympics’ Project Unify Basketball and Soccer programs for two years. Her passion for working with children extends to her career goals as she pursues her secondary education degree at Concordia University.

Background: Coach Kelly has been playing soccer since she was five years old. She currently works at an elementary school where she is an educational assistant. Coach Kelly has worked there for four years, and it is her job to teach students new games that are fun and safe for everyone at recess!

Coach Melanie

Background: Coach Melanie loves soccer. She started playing on a team when she was nine years old but has loved the sport ever since she could walk. Her dad introduced her to it when she was very young and taught her a lot about the game. She is half Argentine and even though she’s only been there once as a baby, soccer has always helped her feel connected to her family there, who also loves the game. She is very excited to share her love of this sport with the children she coaches.

Coach Morgan

Background: Morgan grew up in the Midwest, but she moved to Portland in the summer of last year. Morgan has a wide variety of talents that keep her occupied, especially in the fine arts. She dabbles in jewelry making, photography, drawing, painting, cooking, violin, and of course, soccer. Morgan grew up playing sports including speed skating, basketball, track and field, cross-country, bicycling, but soccer has continued to be her favorite. She still plays in an indoor league in town.

Background: Coach Nick is a theater actor, voice over actor, singer and a major cycling enthusiast. Before joining Soccer Shots, Nick was a product expert for Dyson, and still works part time at a bicycle shop. He has played soccer all his life. In high school, if he wasn’t on stage, he was on the pitch playing center mid or center left. Since moving to Portland from Chicago he’s gravitated to downhill mountain biking when he’s in between soccer teams.

Background: Sariah Shellman has been working with kids all her life. She started teaching piano lessons and transitioned to teaching after-school chess classes and coding classes while she got her Associate of Arts at Clark College. Now she is getting her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and is excited to teach with Soccer Shots. She played soccer in elementary school and loves the cooperative side of soccer.

Background: Shelby has been coaching soccer since she moved to Portland in 2012. Through Soccer Shots, she found a deep passion for child development through soccer. She recently started to pursue coaching older players through club but has found that nothing compares to working in a silly, non-competitive environment. Her favorite part of this job is working with players that have a hard time participating and finding ways to make soccer a fun and fulfilling experience for them.

Coach Tom

Background: Coach Tom moved to Portland from the UK five years ago where he has continued his love affair with the game of soccer. Having played for as long as he can remember, Tom realized he would never play in a World Cup and thus decided he would have to do the next best thing; coach at the World Cup and so began his coaching career at just 16. Tom has coached at many levels and age groups (from U5-U18) and in many countries (including the UK, Singapore, Australia, Spain and the US).
Credentials: FA Coaching Levels 1 & 2, USSF F & E Licenses, CPR/First Aid Certified, NFHS Certified Soccer Coach.

Passions: Besides watching, writing about, reading about, playing and coaching soccer Tom is an unapologetic film nerd/snob.
Wild Card: Tom takes great pride in his ability to solve fictional murders, in either book, TV or film format. Locked room mysteries are his specialty.

Background: Coach Will comes to Soccer Shots with a lifetime’s immersion in soccer as a player, coach, and referee. He has previously worked in the agriculture sector as a harvester for local organic farms and as an auditor for an environmental nonprofit. Will also likes to write shorts stories and play jazz saxophone.
